There are various forms of discipline included in the Olympic Games line-up, with some using special apparatus and other types reserved just for women. Artistic gymnastics is performed using apparatus such as a horse, rings, vault, parallel bars or high bar, the trampoline is a relatively new inclusion in the line-up and rhythmic gymnastics is the event for women, which incorporates gymnastics with dance moves.

The gymnastics events tend to attract some of the youngest athletes and are popular with spectators, who admire the agility and flexibility of their gymnasts. There are a number of hopeful gymnasts keen to gain a coveted place on Team GB for 2012, including Lizzie Beddoe, a British Gymnastics Champion and Jessica Hogg, British Floor Champion.

The 2012 gymnastics event will be taking place in two arenas at the North Greenwich Arena in London and there will be 18 gold medals up for grabs.
